Image Guided Ablation

Image-guided abolition is a minimally invasive procedure which is carried out for cancer patients. Ablation involves the usage of image guidance such as MRI and CT scans to precisely insert a needle or probe into the surface of a tumour and then use the means of extreme heat or cold to destroy a tumour. Image-guided ablation is of three types:

  • Microwave ablation
  • Cryoablation
  • Radiofrequency ablation

This technique is used commonly to treat conditions such as bone tumours, and kidney, lung and liver cancer. As compared to surgery it is less invasive and can be easily carried out on an outpatient basis. Healthcare providers and doctors use this technique to reduce the size of the tumour and cure or relieve the symptoms associated with cancer.

Why is image-guided ablation advised by the doctors?
The image-guided ablation procedure is advised by the doctors for several reasons. Some of them are mentioned below.

  • It is a minimally invasive procedure with short recovery time, less recovery and fewer side effects as compared to surgery.
  • Ablation allows the targeted destruction of inaccessible tumours.
  • Ablation can help in achieving a cure for cancer, reduce the size of the tumour and relieve symptoms. Ablation can be done in patient who is unfit for surgery done to comorbidities.

What diseases are treated through image-guided ablation?
The key diseases that can be treated via the image-guided ablation procedure are as follows:

  •  Liver cancer especially hepatocellular carcinoma
  •  Osteoid osteoma
  •  Osteoblastoma
  •  Functional adrenal tumours
  •  Certain other tumours in specific settings

Who are the ideal candidates for this procedure?
The ideal candidates for image-guided ablation are as follows:

  • Patients who are considered unfit for the surgery either due to their overall health or the location and size of the tumour.
  • Patients in which the tumours can be destroyed or precisely targeted using image-guided ablation using CT scans or ultrasound guidance.
