Interventional Oncology/Interventional Radiology

Interventional oncology (IO) is the fast growing branch of interventional radiology, which specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and relief of cancer and cancer-related problems using minimally invasive procedures performed under the guidance of imaging techniques.

These techniques can be applied in combination with other treatment modalities for improved outcomes. For example, interventional oncology techniques can be used to shrink large tumours, making them easier to remove. Intra-arterial administration of chemotherapeutic drugs can enhance their effectiveness while also minimizing the negative impacts of their systemic delivery.

Interventional oncology (IO) treatments can be hugely beneficial for patients. They are minimally invasive, causing less pain, fewer side effects, and shorter recovery times. Many IO procedures can be done on an outpatient basis. This results in lowering patient costs and saving time.

Diseases Treated

Different imaging techniques of interventional radiology can be used to treat a wide range of diseases. These diseases include:

  •  Liver cancer: Primary liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma and metastasized liver cancers can be managed with interventional radiology.
  •  Lung cancer: Primary lung cancers in few situations.
  •  Bone tumours: Various cancers affecting different bones and musculoskeletal tissue cancers fall under this category. Some examples include osteoblastoma, osteoid osteoma, and others.
  •  Thyroid nodules: Targeted lasers heat the thyroid nodule, resulting is tissue damage, scar tissue formation and a reduction in the nodule's size.
  •  Arteriovenous malformations: AVMs or arteriovenous malformations are abnormal connections between arteries and veins. These abnormal connections can cause serious complications such as bleeding, skin ulceration, and cardiac failure.  They can be well managed with interventional radiology procedures.

Key procedures performed at the centre

At Action Cancer Hospital, we offer integrative care services that can assist you in managing the side effects of cancer treatment. These services are backed by evidence and include emotional support, nutritional support, oncology rehabilitation, pain management, and behavioural health. Some of the most common interventional radiology/oncology procedures include:

  •  Biopsies: Biopsies of various kinds are required to confirm the diagnosis of cancer. They are of different types depending on the location of the tumour, its size, the and few others factors.
  •  Tumour ablation procedures: These minimally invasive treatments destroy tissue using extreme temperatures. Ablation may be used to treat tumours or alleviate symptoms. Radiofrequency and microwave ablation are types of ablation  procedures popularly employed.
  •  Tumour embolization: Tumor embolization is a procedure that can be done before a planned surgery to reduce blood loss during the operation. This is achieved by shutting down the major blood supply to a tumour.
  •  Venous access: This procedure uses image-guided minimally invasive procedures.
  •  Palliative treatments: Image guided tumour ablation helps shrink tumours as a palliative measure to lower pain and improve quality of life.
  •  Fluid build-up management: It is common in cancer patients to experience fluid build-up as a side effect of treatments and cancer itself. Hence, managing fluid build-ups becomes essential.
  •  Biliary procedures: An interventional radiologist uses imaging procedures such as X-rays and ultrasound for guidance to gair access to biliary system for drainage/stent placement.
