Medical Oncology

Oncology is the study of cancer with several branches based on the affected organs of the body and different treatment procedures. Medical oncology is one such branch that deals with treating cancer using medicines that target cancer cells. It is often the first line of treatment, followed by radiation therapy and / or surgery, as indicated. Once a patient is diagnosed with cancer, the medical oncologist helps in the following ways:

  • Explain the cancer diagnosis and its stage, followed by discussing the risks and benefits of all possible treatment modalities. Further, they recommend the best possible course of action based on the condition.
  • Provide high-quality and compassionate care.
  • Aid in improving quality of life by managing pain and other side effects from treatment procedures or the disease itself.
  • Psychology support for family members and caregivers

A cancer patient often needs to be treated through a multidisciplinary Doctor/ Experts approach, which includes a team of specialists from different specialties. This is because cancer treatment requires a combination of therapies for Cure and care of cancer. In complex cases, a tumour board may be called upon to review the case, which consists of experts from all relevant disciplines who consult on the best course of treatment for an individual patient.

At Action Cancer Hospital, our medical oncology department provides a patient-centric, multidisciplinary approach for treating our patients. Our state-of-the-art technology allows us to combat various forms of cancer with ease. We strive to treat the disease and support patients and their families throughout their battle with cancer.

Diseases treated by the department

  • Breast Cancer: It is one of the most common cancers developing in females. However, it may also rarely be seen in obese males.
  • Head & Neck Cancer: Head and neck cancers are cancers affecting the oral cavity (mouth), including the tongue, lips, floor of the mouth, gums, palate, vestibule, cheeks (buccal mucosa), sinuses, throat, and other neck regions.
  • Lung Cancer: The most common form of cancer is lung cancer, which affects people who are active smokers. However, cases of lung cancer in passive smokers have also become very common. Industrial pollution, air pollution, and use of  tobacco products are some of the common causes.
  • Brain Tumour: Brain tumours can occur in any part of the brain. Common symptoms include headaches, intractable vomiting, seizures, vision problems, and difficulty with balance or coordination.
  • Cervical Cancer: Cervical cancer is a type of cancer in the cervix, primarily caused by HPV. Regular screening and HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination are crucial for prevention and early detection.
  • Ovarian Cancer: Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries, often diagnosed at advanced stages. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Early detection improves treatment outcomes significantly.
  • Stomach Cancer: Stomach cancer, or gastric cancer, develops in the stomach lining. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss, nausea, and loss of appetite. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment.
  • Liver Cancer: Liver cancer, originating in the liver cells, often presents late symptoms. Symptoms include abdominal pain, jaundice, weight loss, vomiting and fatigue. Early detection and treatment are critical for improved prognosis.
  • Gall Bladder Cancer: Gallbladder cancer arises in the gallbladder lining. Symptoms include abdominal pain, jaundice, nausea, and bloating. Early detection through imaging and biopsy is vital for effective treatment and improved  outcomes.
  • Renal Cancer: Renal cancer, affecting the kidneys, may present with symptoms like blood in urine, flank pain, and weight loss. Early detection via imaging and biopsy is crucial for optimal treatment.
  • Pancreatic Cancer: Pancreatic cancer develops in the pancreas, often diagnosed at advanced stages. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, jaundice, weight loss, indigestion and vomiting. Early detection improves treatment options and  outcomes.
  • Esophageal cancer: Esophageal cancer affects the esophagus, often diagnosed late. Symptoms may include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, weight loss, and heartburn. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment and improved  prognosis.
  • Thyroid cancer: Thyroid cancer develops in the thyroid gland, often detected as a thyroid nodule. Symptoms may include neck swelling, difficulty swallowing, and changes in voice. Early diagnosis leads to effective treatment.
  • Thymoma and Thymic Carcinoma: These tumours form in the thymus, an organ behind the breastbone that plays a role in the immune system. It is slow-growing but can become aggressive and cause cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
  • Gastro-esophageal junction Cancer: This cancer develops at the junction of the stomach and oesophagus. Heartburn, difficulty swallowing, vomiting and weight loss are common signs.
  • Fallopian Tube Cancer: Rare cancer that starts in the fallopian tubes is asymptomatic in the early stages but may cause pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, and weight loss.
  • Mesothelioma: This cancer forms in the mesothelium - a thin lining along the heart, lungs and abdomen. Symptoms may include chest pain, abdominal depression and pain abdomen.
  • Germ Cell Cancer: These cancers develop from germ cells, the reproductive cells in the testes (men) or ovaries (women), but may also occur in other body parts.
  • Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour (GIST): It originates from the connective tissue in the digestive tract and causes abdominal pain, bleeding, and an early feeling of satiety.
  • Glioblastoma (GBM): It is the most aggressive form of brain cancer that causes headaches, seizures, altered speech and weakness.
  • Urinary Bladder Cancer: As the name suggests, urinary bladder cancer originates in the lining of the urinary bladder and causes hematuria or blood in urine.
  • Melanoma: Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer that can occur as a new mole or malignant changes in the existing moles. It is the most serious form because it is difficult to diagnose, given that it may appear like a normal  mole on the skin surface.
  • Colorectal Cancer / Anal Cancer: Colorectal cancer, affecting the colon or rectum, is a significant health concern worldwide. Early detection through screening saves lives. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted  therapy, emphasizing the importance of awareness, prevention, and timely intervention.
  • Leukaemia: Leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, disrupts the production of normal blood cells. Symptoms include fatigue, easy bruising, and infections. Treatment involves chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and stem cell  transplantation, highlighting the need for early diagnosis and comprehensive care.

Key procedures performed at the centre

Here are some of the most popular treatment modalities of cancer offered at Action Medical Center:

  • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is also known as drug therapy, which involves taking pills or injections that contain drugs that target and destroy cancer cells in the body. This is most often the first line of therapy.
  • Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC): Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal chemotherapy involves injected “heated drugs” or “hot drugs” in the abdominal cavity. This therapy is performed after abdominal cancer surgery.
  • Regional Chemotherapy: When the drug is injected through a catheter inserted in the artery which carries blood to the tumour, the procedure is known as regional chemotherapy. The catheter is attached to a pump under the skin (like a  pacemaker) to continuously deliver the drug.
  • Targeted Therapy: This therapy uses drugs or substances to identify and attack specific types of cancer cells.
  • Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy jump-starts the immune system to fight cancer. It has been shown to improve quality of life and survival rates.
  • Hormone Therapy: Hormone therapy or endocrine therapy slows or completely stops the progression of cancer cells in the body that are endocrine in origin. Like Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Abdominal Cancer.
