Miscellaneous Procedures

Interventional oncology (IO) is fast growing branch of interventional radiology, which specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and relief of cancer and cancer-related problems using minimally invasive procedures performed under the guidance of imaging techniques. Most interventional radiology procedures are outpatient or may require a short hospital stay. Some of the most common interventional radiology/oncology procedures include:

  • Tumour ablation procedures
  • Tumour embolisation
  • Venous access
  • Biopsies
  • Palliative treatments
  • Fluid build-up management
  • Biliary procedures

Apart from those listed above, miscellaneous procedures are performed to combat different situations. These include:

  • J-wire Placement
  • Breast Clip marker placement
  • Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) Management
  • Pulmonary Embolism Management
  • Venous Stenting for Obstruction
  • Acute arterial thrombosis Management
  • IVC filter placement & retrieval

Why are miscellaneous procedures advised by the doctors?
Each procedure has a different application, as described below:

  • J-wire Placement: positioned to access the desired position in the vascular system. This helps to navigate through the venous system safely and accurately.
  • Breast Clip marker placement: A small marker on clip is positioned in the breast moss. Even after chemotherapy has reduced on the resolved tumor the areas of interest can still be located by the doctor using the clip.
  • Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) Management: The main goals of treating deep venous thrombosis (DVT) include preventing pulmonary embolism (PE), improving symptoms, and avoiding or minimizing the chance of developing post thrombotic syndrome (PTS). IVC filter is placed to prevent pulmonary embolism
  • Pulmonary Embolism Management: The primary goal of treating a pulmonary embolism is to prevent the blood clot from increasing in size and prevent the formation of new clots. Rapid and timely treatment is crucial to avoid severe complications or even death.
  • Acute arterial thrombosis Management: If acute thrombotic ischemia is not treated, it can result in tissue infarction.
